We always try to use only standing dead trees to make our furniture. In pine this consists mainly of Lodge Pole pine. Within the term " Lodge pole pine" the variations are endless, you may hear the following terms when discussing our pine products with us.
NATURAL PINE:
These logs are usually light in color, straight, and easy to work with. We peel the bark off completely by hand with a draw knife the sand repeatedly with ever finer grit sand paper until we get a nice smooth, uniform feel.
SKIP PEEL PINE:
These can be natural (or other type) logs, that during the hand peeling process we leave some of the cambium layer under the bark. This gives the logs a more rustic look but they are just as smooth to the touch.
BLUE PINE:
Blue pine is actually caused by a fungus in the log that can only live and grow under certain conditions of moisture and temperature. At times "blue pine" can have many different colors including browns, greens, grays and even pinkish colors but blues and grays are most common. Blue pine can also vary greatly in degrees some logs have very little blue: just a touch here and there while others are heavily blued. We always ask for input as to how much if any blue you want and then be consistent with all the pieces of your order. For example. often we will use lumber from the very same tree to make tops to your nightstands as well as your dresser when they are ordered at the same time.
BURL PINE and CATS FACES: These are growths in the tree and limbs and can take many different forms. They are considered very desirable and highly sought after. Finding cats faces and such is a lot like hunting trophy elk; they are where you find them. We spend countless hours walking the ridge tops and valleys just looking for interesting pieces that we want to use in up coming projects. We consider this one of the perks of the job.
KNOTTY PINE:
When a log has a lot of limbs growing from it, and we begin to remove those limbs sometimes we can emphasize those areas by leaving just an extra 1/4 inch or so protruding and then sanding smooth. This creates a lot of character in what might have otherwise been a "natural" log.
SNOWLOADS AND ARCHES:
Sometimes we are asked how we bend those big pieces to get our arches and twists. The truth is we would never attempt such a thing. Nature has provided all the interesting material we could ever use. Those arches and twists are the result of months of heavy snows bending the young trees over and ultimately causing them to continue to grow that way. For this reason these pieces are under no pressure or stress, they are very stable as this is their natural state.
GNARLED PINE:
While most of the other features of lodge pole are created by environment issues, Gnarls are created by elk and deer rubbing their antlers against the tender bark, or by other animals chewing etc. as these areas heal up sometimes very interesting "art work" is left behind.
So you see there's a little more to it than just saying you want a lodge pole pine bed, working with mother nature, we can create a look that ranges from contemporary to traditional to rustic. Let us build your furniture just the way you want it.
